When I hear stories about some of the folks around here, about how
difficult it was for them to get in the park service, I just laugh
because I just sent in an application and they called me to come in to
work. It was pretty darn easy. Although that is pretty much the way it
was with engineers. Engineers have more choices than people who are
looking for recreation or forestry. Once I got into it, I found that it
melded with my interests quite nicely. I'm kind of the idealistic sort
of guy, so the whole national park concept appeals to me a lot.
Preservation and conservation fits in nicely with my training and
interest in public works. So it's worked out pretty well.
Q How long
did you stay in Colorado?
AI stayed in Denver
working for the Central Design Office. They do the design and
construction work for the whole country. I was there for a couple of
years and then a job opened up in Glacier for a park engineer. We had
spent an extended vacation there and it was my favorite place in the
world, so when a job opportunity opened I jumped on it and ended up
spending 11 years in Glacier. Eventually, I decided I wanted to be a
facility manager, so I started looking around for a job.
